Arch(haha)enemy!

So I skipped yesterday. Wasn't feelin it. I'll try today :)

Pretty laid back weekend, got a workout in, drank some Blue Moons with Bran and did some brunching with the rents (read: mimosas).

Last week I posted about this 5k that I'm dreading. I also mentioned the shoes I got (that I currently want to throat punch).  So I've been trying to break them in.  Up until now I've had a cute, bright pink pair of meshy Nike FreeRun's that offer absolutely no support for my fat/flat feet.  They've been great for the gym though and I'm happy with them there.  So I signed up for the 5k and realized these shoes weren't gonna cut it.  Went and bought the Brooks Ravenna 4's and a pair of insoles (because the knowledgeable employee dumbass at the shoe store said to).  Well, the first couple times I wore them I felt like I was on a cloud.  I did a little (very little) jogging on the treadmill and my usual workout at the gym.  I was golden.  Then yesterday morning I tried the treadmill again and my right arch, or lack there of, started to hurt like shit.

So upon some recommendations I took the "aftermarket" insoles out and replaced the original Brooks insoles.  Then I proceeded to go on a 3.2 mile walk, no arch pain!  I was pretty thrilled!  Then I got home and realized how fucking badly my heels were hurting.  I guess taking the insoles out made my feet sit deeper in the shoes and had scraped my little achilles raw, yay $100 shoes!  So I wore the trusty support-less Nikes this morning and am planning on exchanging the Brooks bastards tomorrow after work.  We'll see what kinds of limitations they have on their "15 Day Test Run" deal.  Hopefully I can find another suitable shoe to try and hopefully said shoe doesn't roofie my feet and take advantage of them.

With that said, my 5k training is actually going pretty shitty.  I might try a jog in the support-less Nikes and see what happens.  At least that'd give me an excuse to buy another pair of ridiculously cute brightly colored shoes, which I've already informed the hubs that I need.  Along with some new workout clothes, and a new pair of sunglasses, and some new flip flops…and I want a deck on our house.  See what I did there?  He'll shit himself at the deck and the rest of the stuff sounds like chump change.  You're welcome.
Hope you're having a Happy Tuesday!  Oh and here's the outfit of the day.  Oh Loft, how I love you.

How's YOUR 5k training going?  Any tips for my terrible horrible no good very flat feet?

  1. Do y'all have a running store that will 'test' your stride close by? Sometimes they can make recommendations about shoes and such. I went to Big Peach here in ATL and got some ridiculously expensive & ugly shoes. They felt glorious on my feet and I love them for that. Still feel glorious and I just upgraded to a new color combo. Still ugly, but I'm too old to care now.

  3. I don't have feet issues with my feet while running it's while I'm doing the other workouts that my arches kill me, mainly doing lunges and squats. I got a new pair of Asics and at first they hurt but after a week or two they started feeling much better. You are in much better shape than I am but I guess what I'm trying to say is run slow and work up to running more and running faster. When I first started running instead of doing couch to 5K I did my running based on the songs I listened to,run a song walk a song, run 2 songs walk 1 and so on. Made me focus on the songs and not the pain I was feeling or imagining. Good luck!

  4. You should consider going to your local running store and having your gait analyzed.(It's a free service at mine) They can recommend a shoe for you. I was having terrible knee pain and shin splints before and after getting the "right" shoe for my foot I no longer have the pain. You may even have to have custom inserts made-read $$$, but probably worth it if you really want to run! Good luck!!!

  5. #1) Checked your blog last night at 10:00 and was highly disappointed that I didn't get to stalk your new post.

#2) I've always heard that new shoes are not a good idea for a 5k. Gonna take some time to break those bastards in, so good luck on that.

#3) I need new running (ahem, jogging/walking) shoes and am scared as hell to start looking. Momma (I'm not really a momma...only to a cat) doesn't want to drop a bill on a pair that's only going to last a year or less.

#4) I'm not doing C25K training or anything. Just turning on the headphones and running with the songs that get me going. Otherwise, I walk it at a 3.6 pace. Just pushing myself each time to run my mile faster than last time. Seems to be working for me so far!

  7. I have... errrr.. HAD really bad shin splints and now I get knee pain. Hooray for knocking on 30! LOL! I got the Asics Gel-Kayano 18 with Sofsole Athlete Performance Insoles. That alleviated some of the shin pain. But I think what completely resolved it was the compression socks. Now if I could only get the soreness out of my knee?? I'm just going to keep a rest day in between runs and see if that does it. Good luck!

I saw a commercial yesterday for some new Dr Scholls "Active Series" inserts.. suppose to be good.. not sure!

  9. I have horribly flat feet. I used to run in Nike Frees too until my foot started to hurt like a bitch. I tried to run through it, but then I started running lop-sided which made my whole left side (ankle, knee and hip) hurt. Don't do that. The chiropractor had to fix me. And I had to go to the shoe store (I went to a like legit one where they watch you walk and look at your feet and really figure out what you need) and got some CUTE HOT PINK Brooks shoes. I LOVE them. I run without pain now and I'm learning to deal with wearing shoes with actual arches in them...

  10. Love the outfit. There is nothing like a bright pair of pants to make your day better!! I bought a pair of Nike's and went for a run and was dying after like .10 of a mile! They had no support (but they're so cute). Good thing I bought them on sale. I had to go back to my trusted Adidas tennis sneakers that have awesome support, but are so heavy. I have pretty flat feel so I am interested in what you find.
